Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 3/10

How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

Wechsel's trail weight (inner, fly and poles) is 2,637 g, in the 2.0-2.69 kg band; total with pegs and bag is 2,970 g. Alpinetrek lists 2,600 g.

Rain protection

From maker's figures 8/10

How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.

Wechsel gives a 5,000 mm fly and a 7,000 mm floor with taped seams. The fly is in the 3,000 mm+ band and the floor is over 2,000 mm, so nothing is taken off. The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.

Wind

Estimate from maker's specs: maker's season rating (fewer than 3 reviews about wind) 5/10

How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

No published review says how it copes with wind, so this is an estimate from the maker's season rating.

Space

From maker's figures 7/10

Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 7: Better than most.

Wechsel's drawing shows an inner 220 cm long and 125 cm wide: 2.2 x 1.25 = 2.75 m2, so 1.375 m2 each, in the 1.35-1.59 band (close to the edge). OUTDOOR magazine measured only 2.1 m2 on the older Charger.

Packed size

From maker's figures 2/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 2: A weak point.

Packs to 50 cm long x 20 cm across: 3.1416 x 10 x 10 x 50 = 15,708 cm3, so 15.71 L, in the 15 L+ band.

In short

Good for

  • Two campers on a tight budget who want a freestanding tent with two doors and two porches
  • Summer and early autumn trips where weight and pack size matter less
  • Pitching the inner alone on warm nights

Strengths

  • Fly 5,000 mm and floor 7,000 mm HH with taped seams, the top rain band
  • Two doors and two porches, so neither sleeper climbs over the other
  • Freestanding with aluminium poles; the inner pitches first and the fly clips on
  • Inner 220 cm long, 125 cm wide and 110 cm high (Wechsel's drawing)

Weaknesses

  • 2,637 g trail weight is heavy for two (about 1.3 kg each)
  • Packs to 50 x 20 cm (15.7 L), large for a 2-person tent
  • Wechsel's own FAQ says the PU coating on its Travel Line tents hardens over the years
  • OUTDOOR magazine's 2022 test of the older Charger measured only 2.1 m2 of inner area and a 184 cm lying length, well below Wechsel's 220 x 125 cm now
  • No independent test of this version found, so wind, pitching and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores
  • Shops list it as three seasons; Wechsel's page gives no season rating, so that is our assumption
  • Inner size taken from Wechsel's dimension drawing, not a stated area
