Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

3 cm thick.
Quietness
Estimate from maker's specs: mat type (fewer than 3 reviews about noise) 7/10How little it crinkles or squeaks when you turn over. 7: Better than most.

Weight
From maker's figures 4/10How much it adds to your pack. 4: A bit below average.
850 g (Vango's own figure; Tiso's spec line misprints it as '850kg') sits in the 750-999 g band. T3 weighed 860 g on its 2022 sample.

In short
Good for
- Budget three-season camps and Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, where it is on the Award's recommended list
Strengths
- Self-inflating foam core with Vango's 'core cutting' holes to save weight and bulk
- 75D recycled ripstop outer, non-slip print, push-to-open valve that twists to lock
- Repair kit included
- T3 called it comfortable, good value and quiet to sleep on, unlike mats with foil layers
Weaknesses
- Heavy for a hiking mat at 850 g, and bulky at 26 x 15 cm (about 4.6 L); T3 says it is on the chunky side
- The R 4.0 has no test standard named, so we don't score warmth
- Only 3 cm thick, and T3 says it takes a couple of hours to self-inflate fully
- Little independent testing: T3 (2022) is the one review of this exact model found
