Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 5/10How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
Vango's trail weight of 1.79 kg is in the 1.5–1.99 kg band (2.02 kg with everything). Hike and Wild says it weighs just under 2 kg.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 8/10How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.
Fly 3,000 mm is the top band (the top band); the 6,000 mm floor takes nothing off. Hike and Wild says it has never let in water in about two years. The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.
Wind
Estimate from maker's specs: maker's season rating (fewer than 3 reviews about wind) 5/10How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
No published review says how it copes with wind, so this is an estimate from the maker's season rating.
Space
Estimate from maker's specs: berths and tent shape (no floor area published) 7/10Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 7: Better than most.
Estimate from maker's specs
Packed size
From maker's figures 7/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 7: Better than most.
Vango's pack size of 42 cm long x 14 cm across: 3.1416 x 7 x 7 x 42 = 6,465 cm³, so 6.47 L, in the 4–6.9 L band. Tiso and Jacksons give 46 x 15 cm (about 8.1 L, the 7–9.9 L band, 3), so we used Vango's figure.
What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score
Pitching*
Reviewers' average 6/10How quickly and easily one person can pitch it, including in wind and rain.
4 reviews on pitching, e.g. "The central tensioning strap does have the potential to be fiddly on the first pitch".
Reviewers disagree on this.
Condensation*
Estimate: only 1 review about condensation (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10How dry it stays inside on still, damp nights; higher is drier.
1 review on condensation, e.g. "condensation has just simply never been an issue for me".
In short
Good for
- One person on a small budget who wants a first wild-camping tent
- Beginners and Duke of Edinburgh groups: it is on Vango's DofE-recommended list
- Three-season wild camps below the tops, where a heavier, cheaper tent is fine
Strengths
- Quick all-in-one pitch with one pole: inner and fly go up together in 2 to 5 minutes
- Fly rated 3,000 mm and floor 6,000 mm, both fully taped, with a bathtub floor
- Two doors, mesh vents at each end and a tension-band system that braces the fly in wind
- Low profile that two reviewers say holds well in gusty weather
- Reflective guy lines, aluminium pegs and a spare-part supply from Vango
Weaknesses
- Heavier than most solo tents at this size: 1.79 kg trail weight and 2.02 kg packed
- Vango gives no inner floor size; reviewers call it very snug for two and only one person with kit is comfortable
- Not freestanding, with a single small porch, so there is little room for wet kit
- Hard to pitch in strong wind and the ends need the pegging straps used properly to stay taut
- Vango says it is not meant for extreme storms; Vango publishes no season rating, so we assume three seasons
