Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 3/10

How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

Vango's 2.4 kg (Millets' copy of the spec) is in the 2.0–2.69 kg band. Becky the Traveller also lists 2.39 kg for her tent; HikersBlog gives 2.20 kg for the 2016 model and Chris Waldron's own older tent weighed 2.07 kg, so the weight has gone up over the years.

Rain protection

From maker's figures 8/10

How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.

Fly 3,000 mm HH is in the 3,000 mm+ band, and the 6,000 mm floor is over 2,000 mm so nothing is taken off. (Chris Waldron quotes the fly at 5,000 mm; Millets' copy of Vango's spec says 3,000 mm. Either figure gives the same score.) The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.

Wind

From reviews 8/10

How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 8: Clearly better than most.

Reviews of the twin-door build report good stability in strong winds with guylines and tension bands used. GBAC reports use up to approximately 64 km/h without structural concerns; HikersBlog received a review sample.

Space

Estimate from maker's specs: berths and tent shape (no floor area published) 7/10

Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 7: Better than most.

Estimate from maker's specs

Packed size

From maker's figures 4/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 4: A bit below average.

Packs to 47 cm long x 18 cm across: 3.1416 x 9 x 9 x 47 = 11,960 cm³, so 11.96 L, in the 10–14.9 L band.

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Pitching*

Reviewers' average 8/10

How quickly and easily one person can pitch it, including in wind and rain.

5 reviews on pitching, e.g. "Pitching is a breeze with only two poles".

Condensation*

Reviewers' average 7/10

How dry it stays inside on still, damp nights; higher is drier.

4 reviews on condensation, e.g. "woke up a little damp from condensation despite having the vents open throughout the night".

In short

Good for

  • First wild-camping tent for one person with a pile of kit, or for Duke of Edinburgh groups
  • Exposed pitches and windy weather on a low budget
  • Walkers who want the fly and inner to pitch together in the wet

Strengths

  • Low tunnel shape with a tension-band system that braces the mid pole, and reviewers of the 2016 and 2018 models found it stable in wind
  • Fly and inner pitch together in about 5–10 minutes on two colour-coded poles
  • Fly 3,000 mm and floor 6,000 mm with taped seams, and reviewers report no leaks
  • Twin doors and porches, plus inner pockets

Weaknesses

  • Heavy for one person at 2.4 kg, and packs to 47 x 18 cm (about 12 L)
  • Called a 2-person tent but really a one-person tent with kit: two people are squeezed, and people about 1.8 m tall touch the walls
  • Small porches (Becky the Traveller, Hikers Blog)
  • Sold only through GO Outdoors, Blacks and Millets: it has gone from Vango's own site (per Chris Waldron)
