Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Warmth
Estimate from maker's specs: 133 g/m² insulation 8/10How warm they keep your hands at camp and on the move. 8: Clearly better than most.
Estimate from maker's specs
Weight
From maker's figures 8/10How much they add to your pack. 8: Clearly better than most.
80 g for the pair, Trekmates' figure in the specification on its product page (size not stated): the 60-109 g band. UKC's reviewer weighed the glove at about 100 g, which is in the same band.
Waterproofing
From maker's figures 4/10How well they keep your hands dry and the wind out, from how they are made. 4: A bit below average.
Trekmates' own DRY Protect technology, described as 'waterproof and breathable' and rated 5000/5000 (the page gives no units). Trekmates doesn't name a membrane maker and doesn't say the insert is sealed, so under the method it is an own-brand waterproof with no sealed statement: 2, the same call as the Trekmates Gratton DRY Glove. It would be the 4 band if Trekmates said the insert is sealed.
What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score
Dexterity*
Estimate: only 1 review about dexterity (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 6/10How easily you can work zips, buckles and a phone with them on.
1 review on dexterity, e.g. "there is the obvious benefit that they're much easier to operate things with".
Durability*
Estimate: only 1 review about durability (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 6/10How well the palms, seams and fingertips hold up over seasons of use.
1 review on durability, e.g. "I haven't personally had any issues with durability, I suspect I would if I was putting them through really rough use".
In short
Good for
- A warm glove that packs smaller than an orange, for cold days on the hill
- Wet, cold walking where a waterproof insert matters more than a rugged palm
- Keeping a phone or GPS in use on a cold morning: the glove is touchscreen compatible
Strengths
- Light at 80 g a pair for an insulated waterproof glove
- 133 g/m2 PrimaLoft Gold Eco insulation
- DRY Protect waterproof, breathable insert rated 5000/5000
- Touchscreen compatible
Weaknesses
- Microfibre PU palm rather than leather, so it is less rugged for rough use
- UKC gives about 100 g for the glove against Trekmates' 80 g (same score band)
- Light ripstop outer: UKC expects it to wear faster under rough use
