Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 1/10How much it adds to your pack. 1: A real weak point.
Trangia's product data lists 830 g for the gas-burner version (745 g with the spirit burner): non-stick 1 litre pan, plain 1 litre pan, 18 cm non-stick frying pan lid, two windshields, gas burner, handle and strap, no canister. That is in the 650 g and over band. Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 834 g.
Fuel use
Estimate from maker's specs: fuel type (no fuel use figure published) 5/10How much fuel it burns to boil a litre in calm air: less fuel to carry. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
Estimate from maker's specs
Boil speed (calm air)
From maker's figures 8/10How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in calm air. 8: Clearly better than most.
Trangia says the Storm gas burner boils 1 litre in 3.5 minutes (210 s), in the 210-269 s band and right on the line. Lone Wolf Explorer timed just over 5 minutes for 1 litre on the Storm burner (in a GSI kettle, with a gas mix that suited the burner). We band Trangia's figure.
In short
Good for
- One or two people who want a windshielded stove with real simmer control and a faster boil than a spirit burner
- Anyone who wants a built-in windshield and a gas burner, and is happy to carry the burner and hose apart from the pans
- Cooking meals in non-stick pans without scraping off burnt food
Strengths
- Gas burner with a valve for low simmer to full boil; Trangia says 3.5 minutes for 1 litre
- Two-part windshield and pan stand in one (upper and lower part, Trangia)
- Non-stick 1 litre pan and 18 cm non-stick frying pan lid
- The Storm burner's straight valve threads easily through the windshield hole (Broken Back Mountains)
- Packs to 18.5 cm across and 10 cm high, without the gas burner and hose
Weaknesses
- 830 g without a gas canister, in the heaviest weight band we score
- Lone Wolf Explorer measured just over 5 minutes a litre against Trangia's 3.5
- Loud burner, and the burner and hose pack apart from the pans (Lone Wolf Explorer)
- Trangia gives no cold rating for the gas burner, so we do not mark it winter-ready
