Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Warmth

From maker's figures 7/10

How well it stops the cold ground chilling you. 7: Better than most.

Maker's R-value of 4.7 (Therm-a-Rest's FAQ says it rates its pads to ASTM F3340-18) sits in the R 4–5.4 band: good for three-season hills and mild winter nights, short of deep winter.

Thickness

From maker's figures 10/10

How deep it is. Deeper is comfier, above all for side sleepers. 10: The best you can buy for this.

11.7 cm thick.

Quietness

From reviews 9/10

How little it crinkles or squeaks when you turn over. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

Reviewers say the NeoLoft is among the quietest mats they have tested, with no crinkle when you roll over.

Weight

From maker's figures 4/10

How much it adds to your pack. 4: A bit below average.

Maker's 850 g for the Regular Wide sits in the 750–999 g band (the Regular, sold mainly in the US, is 710 g).

Packed size

From maker's figures 4/10

How much room it takes in or on your rucksack. 4: A bit below average.

Packs to a roll 29 cm long and 15 cm across: 3.1416 x 7.5 x 7.5 x 29 = 5,125 cm³, about 5.1 L, in the 4–6.9 L band. OutdoorGearLab found it about the volume of four 1-litre bottles.

In short

Good for

  • Side sleepers and anyone who wants a bed-like pad on a hike
  • One- and two-night wild camps where comfort matters more than pack weight
  • Cold spring and autumn nights and mild winter nights, thanks to R 4.7
  • Light sleepers: the stretch-knit top does not crinkle

Strengths

  • Very thick at 11.7 cm, with vertical sidewalls and side rails that keep you on the pad
  • R 4.7 in a full-width pad of 850 g
  • Quiet, soft stretch-knit top and a 75D polyester base that reviewers trust
  • Separate inflation and deflation valves, with a pump sack and repair kit in the box
  • Packs to about 5.1 L, roughly the size of a rolled midweight down jacket (Outdoors Magic)

Weaknesses

  • Heavy for a backpacking pad: 850 g in the Regular Wide
  • Wide and tall when inflated: two will not fit side by side in many two-person tents, and it can press on the roof of a low tent
  • Better Trail and OutdoorGearLab call it only moderately warm for its weight, and lighter, warmer pads exist
  • Larger when packed than ultralight pads, so it suits short trips better than long treks
