Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Warmth

From maker's figures 7/10

How well it stops the cold ground chilling you. 7: Better than most.

Maker's R-value of 4.5 sits in the R 4–5.4 band: fine for spring, autumn and mild winter nights, not deep cold. Therm-a-Rest's product-page FAQ says its R-values use the ASTM F3340-18 standard.

Thickness

From maker's figures 7/10

How deep it is. Deeper is comfier, above all for side sleepers. 7: Better than most.

7.6 cm thick.

Quietness

From reviews 7/10

How little it crinkles or squeaks when you turn over. 7: Better than most.

Much quieter than the old XLite but not silent: reviewers still hear a faint crinkle when you roll over.

Weight

From maker's figures 9/10

How much it adds to your pack. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

370 g is the maker's figure and the one Ellis Brigham's spec table shows; some shop text still says 354 g (older figure). Testers weighed it at 377-386 g. All under 400 g.

Packed size

From maker's figures 8/10

How much room it takes in or on your rucksack. 8: Clearly better than most.

Packs to 23 x 10 cm: 3.1416 x 5 x 5 x 23 = 1,806 cm³, so 1.8 L, in the 1.5–2.4 L band.

In short

Good for

  • Spring-to-autumn and mild-winter wild camps where a warm, thick mat at very low weight matters
  • Long walks and multi-day trips where every gram and litre of pack space counts

Strengths

  • Very warm for its weight: R 4.5 at about 370 g
  • Packs to about the size of a 1-litre bottle
  • Thick enough to feel comfortable on lumpy ground, and much quieter than the older XLite
  • Comes with a pump sack, stuff sack and repair kit, and the valve lets you let a little air out to adjust firmness

Weaknesses

  • Regular is narrow (51 cm, tapered): some reviewers slipped off the edge, so wriggly sleepers may want the Regular Wide
  • Quieter than before but still rustles a little when you move
  • Not warm enough on its own for proper winter ground or snow
  • Slow to inflate with the pump sack (6 to 8 bagfuls) and slower to squeeze fully flat than mats with a dump valve
  • Thick and long, so can touch the roof of a low or tapering tent
