Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 3/10

How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

Australian Geographic and This Expansive Adventure give a listed trail weight of 2.42 and 2.41 kg, and OutdoorGearLab measured 2.54 kg; all are in the 2.0-2.69 kg band. Packed weight is 2.67 kg (Cotswold Outdoor, Alpinetrek).

Rain protection

From maker's figures 1/10

How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 1: A real weak point.

Fly 1,200 mm (OutdoorGearLab, Australian Geographic, Camping Guidance) is in the 1,200-1,499 mm band, band 2 (3 out of 10). The floor figure conflicts: Alpinetrek and OutdoorGearLab list 1,500 mm, while Australian Geographic and Camping Guidance quote 3,000 mm. The North Face's own page is gone, so we use the lower figure, which is under 2,000 mm and takes a point off (1). On 3,000 mm the score would be 2.

Wind

Estimate: only 2 reviews about wind (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 7/10

How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 7: Better than most.

Not enough evidence: only Better Trail describes the tent in wind (a taut, quiet pitch in light wind, not one it would push into harsher weather, 3), and Australian Geographic only says the reinforced guy points make a solid structure in windy weather (4). This Expansive Adventure says the fabric keeps the wind at bay without describing a test.

Space

From maker's figures 7/10

Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 7: Better than most.

2.84 m² inner floor (OutdoorGearLab measured it; Australian Geographic gives 220 x 127 cm) ÷ 2 people = 1.42 m² each, in the 1.35-1.59 band; two ridge poles keep the walls near vertical (109 cm peak).

Packed size

From maker's figures 3/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

Packs to 55.9 cm long x 17.8 cm across as listed (Alpinetrek, Australian Geographic): 3.1416 x 8.9 x 8.9 x 55.9 = 13,910 cm³, so 13.9 L, in the 10-14.9 L band (OutdoorGearLab measured 50.8 x 16.5 cm, about 10.9 L, the same band).

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Pitching*

Reviewers' average 7/10

How quickly and easily one person can pitch it, including in wind and rain.

4 reviews on pitching, e.g. "this 2-person tent is comfortable, durable, and easy to set up".

In short

Good for

  • Two people on short trips or a basecamp where the weight can be split between two packs
  • Tall campers: Australian Geographic says people over 183 cm sleep without touching the fly

Strengths

  • Two doors and two large trapezoid porches that roll back from the middle
  • Thick 68–75D polyester and 68D floor, with a fully seam-taped canopy and floor
  • Pole clips and colour-coded fly tabs make it freestanding and simple to put up
  • Plenty of ventilation from the mesh walls and high-low vents, plus four corner pockets

Weaknesses

  • Heavy for two at about 2.4 kg trail weight (2.67 kg packed), and bulky at about 56 x 18 cm
  • Fly rated only 1,200 mm; Better Trail notes it stops short of the ground and OutdoorGearLab saw slight seepage through the stitching in a heavy storm
  • The thin steel stakes bend in firm ground (Better Trail) and only 10 come in the box when 14 are needed (Camping Guidance)
  • Door and vestibule zips catch and need two hands (Better Trail, Camping Guidance)
  • Floor rating is unclear: 1,500 mm on Alpinetrek and OutdoorGearLab, 3,000 mm on two reviews
  • No footprint included; it is sold separately
