Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight for its size

From maker's figures 9/10

How much it adds to your pack for the amount it holds. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

SOTO's European page gives 141 g for the pot as sold (with lid) and 1,000 ml, and its US page gives the pot at 118 g and the lid at 23 g, the same 141 g together; neither says whether the mesh bag is in the weight (TheOutdoorGearReview weighed it at 6 g). We use 141 g: 141 g for 1 L = 141 g per litre, under 150 g/L (with the bag about 147, still a 5). Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 144 g and Gaynor Sports 141 g. CleverHiker measured about 150 g with the sack, which would be 150 g per litre, a 4, but that is a reviewer's figure, not SOTO's.

Cooking and ease of use

From reviews 7/10

How evenly it heats, whether food sticks or burns, cleaning, and the handles, lid, pouring and steadiness on a small stove. 7: Better than most.

Five hands-on sources (3, 3, 4, 4, 3): average 3.4 out of 5, so 7 out of 10. CleverHiker (3) finds the wide base heats evenly but the pot isn't non-stick, so it suits boiling and simple meals; the lid doesn't stay on and the spout leaks a little. TheOutdoorGearReview (3) likes the size, grippy base and a lid vent that works, but there are no volume marks and its handle grips melted when the pot sat too close to the flame. Julia the Adventure Geek (3; UK) fits a boil-in-the-bag meal in the wide pot and likes the handles, but there are no marks and the lid won't stay on to pour. Hiking With Martin (4; UK) cooks eggs, bacon and noodles in it, likes the built-in handles, and cleans it by boiling a little water. TheTrailDancer (4) calls the size and rubber-coated handles perfect, and only wants volume marks. The oldest video is from 2020. The pot looks unchanged: the reviewers show the same size, clear plastic lid and folding handles, TheOutdoorGearReview (2023) weighed the lid at 22 g against SOTO's 23 g today, and the part and barcode numbers match SOTO's current page.

In short

Good for

  • Solo walkers or two sharing who want a large, cheap, light 1 L pot
  • Boiling water and one-pot meals such as noodles, pasta and boil-in-the-bag food
  • Packing a stove, a large gas canister and a lighter inside (CleverHiker)

Strengths

  • 141 g for 1 L, 141 g per litre
  • Wide base with high walls: heats evenly and is stable on a stove (CleverHiker, Hiking With Martin)
  • Insulated folding handles that feel sturdy and a lid grip you can hold with gloves (CleverHiker, TheTrailDancer)
  • A rough base grips the stove supports (TheOutdoorGearReview, TheTrailDancer)
  • Roomy: fits a large gas canister, a small stove and a lighter with the lid closed (CleverHiker)

Weaknesses

  • Not non-stick: food sticks and burns more easily and cleaning is harder (CleverHiker)
  • No volume marks inside (TheOutdoorGearReview, TheTrailDancer, Julia, CleverHiker)
  • The plastic lid doesn't stay on while you pour and the spout leaks a little (CleverHiker, Julia)
  • Handle grips can melt if the pot sits too close to the flame (TheOutdoorGearReview)
  • The mesh sack is flimsy and the lid doesn't stay shut without it (CleverHiker, Julia)
  • No independent report on long-term durability
