Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 9/10How much it adds to your pack. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.
Snugpak gives 340 g for the standard size (400 g for the extra long), under the 400 g line.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 5/10How well the fabric keeps out heavy, long rain. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
Snugpak gives 5,000 mm hydrostatic head with taped seams for its Paratex Dry nylon, at the bottom of the 5,000–9,999 mm band. It gives one figure for the whole bag, which counts for the floor too, so nothing is taken off.
Packed size
From maker's figures 10/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 10: The best you can buy for this.
Snugpak gives 14 cm x 10 cm. Read as a stuff sack (length x diameter): 3.1416 x 5 x 5 x 14 = 1,100 cm³, about 1.1 L, under the 2.5 L line.
In short
Good for
- Fast-and-light trips where a 340 g waterproof cover with a centre zip is wanted
- A cover for a sleeping bag under a tarp, or an emergency shelter
- A sleeping bag cover inside a tent, to keep the foot end off the tent wall (Wild Camp Phil)
Strengths
- 340 g and about 1.1 L packed (14 cm x 10 cm)
- Half-length, non-locking centre zip for quick entry and exit (Snugpak, Outdoors With Richard)
- 5,000 mm hydrostatic head with taped seams; Snugpak gives 7.5 L/m²/24 h breathability for its Paratex Dry fabric
Weaknesses
- Tighter than a big army bivvi, and a sleeping mat inside is extremely tight (Wild Camp Phil)
- Wild Camp Phil rates it the least protection of the three bivvies he compares: sticks can poke through
- Snugpak says never to seal it fully: the fabric is not air permeable
- Snugpak's page gives no length, and shops give 220–230 cm
- Condensation, comfort and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores: fewer than 3 usable reports of the current bag
