Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 8/10How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 8: Clearly better than most.
Snugpak's trail weight (fly, poles and inner) is 1.2 kg, in the 1.0–1.49 kg band; 1.52 kg with stakes, guylines and sack.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 8/10How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.
Fly 5,000 mm is in the 3,000 mm+ band (the top band); the floor is also 5,000 mm, so there is no deduction. The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.
Wind
Estimate from maker's specs: maker's season rating (fewer than 3 reviews about wind) 5/10How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
No published review says how it copes with wind, so this is an estimate from the maker's season rating.
Space
From maker's figures 10/10Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 10: The best you can buy for this.
Snugpak's floor of 240 x 90 cm is 2.16 m² (length x width, so a little less if it tapers), for one person: in the 1.6 m²+ band.
Packed size
From maker's figures 6/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 6: A bit better than average.
Packs to 48 cm long x 14 cm across: 3.1416 x 7 x 7 x 48 = 7,389 cm³, so 7.39 L, in the 7–9.9 L band.
In short
Good for
- One person on a hill or moorland wild camp who wants a low, discreet tent
- Solo walkers who want a double-skin tent at about 1.2 kg with 5,000 mm waterproofing on fly and floor
- Hill and moorland leaders and others who want a long, narrow tent that keeps a low profile in wind
Strengths
- Snugpak's 5,000 mm waterproofing on both fly and floor is well above most budget solo tents
- 1.2 kg trail weight and a 48 x 14 cm pack
- Long inner (240 cm), with room beside you for a rucksack
- Mesh inner can be used alone as a bug shelter in warm, dry weather
- Low shape is stealthy and sheds wind (Advnture)
Weaknesses
- Very low: you cannot sit upright inside (Advnture), and the peak is only 70 cm
- No porch or vestibule, so kit stays inside with you
- Inner pitches first, which is awkward in rain
- Not freestanding, so it needs good ground for stakes
- The fly must be guyed out so it does not touch the inner, or condensation can drip through (Advnture)
- Wind, pitching and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores: only one hands-on test (Advnture, 2022) was found
