Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight for its size
From maker's figures 1/10How much it adds to your pack for the water it holds. 1: A real weak point.
The Snow Peak US page lists 360 g for 0.5 L: 720 g per litre, over 500 g/L. The Snow Peak UK page gives parts instead: bottle 230 g, cooler cap 90 g, thermal cap 41 g, tumbler cap 38 g (268 g with the tumbler cap, 271 g with the thermal cap, 399 g with all three caps). Even the lightest of these, 268 g, is 536 g per litre, so the band is the same. Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 318 g with the cooler cap.
Packed size (empty)
From maker's figures 1/10How much room it takes up when it is empty, for the water it holds. 1: A real weak point.
A rigid bottle does not shrink, so we draw it as a cylinder from its height and width. Snow Peak UK gives 77 mm across and 216 mm tall with the cooler or thermal cap, 222 mm with the tumbler cap. With the taller figure: 3.1416 x 3.85 x 3.85 x 22.2 = 1,034 cm³, so 1.03 L empty for 0.5 L held (2.07 per litre), in band 1 (1.8 and over). With 21.6 cm it is 2.01 per litre, same band.
In short
Good for
- Car camping and day trips where one bottle has to do hot drinks, cold drinks and sipping
- Anyone who wants a bottle that holds a whole 500 ml can inside (Snow Peak)
- A premium everyday bottle for the desk and the cup holder, not a weight-saving one
Strengths
- Three caps in the box: thermal for hot, cooler for cold and a tumbler cap to sip from (Snow Peak)
- Double-wall vacuum stainless steel; Snow Peak gives 6 hours of heat or cold
- Compatible with vehicle cup holders (Snow Peak US) and 77 mm across (Snow Peak UK)
- Lifetime guarantee (Snow Peak US)
Weaknesses
- 360 g for 0.5 L: 720 g per litre, in the heaviest weight band, and 399 g with all three caps
- 1.03 L of pack room for 0.5 L of drink
- Only 6 hours of heat or cold (Snow Peak); no test conditions given
- Snow Peak's US page gives the capacity in non-metric units, which convert to 541 ml, against 500 ml in its name; we band 0.5 L
- No independent test of this size was found, so ease of use and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores
