Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Warmth
Estimate from maker's specs: fleece or softshell glove 3/10How warm they keep your hands at camp and on the move. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
Estimate from maker's specs
Weight
From maker's figures 7/10How much they add to your pack. 7: Better than most.
100 g for the pair in size M (The Great Outdoors' quick specs) is in the 60-109 g band, with 10 g to spare. Sealskinz doesn't publish a weight.
Waterproofing
From maker's figures 8/10How well they keep your hands dry and the wind out, from how they are made. 8: Clearly better than most.
Sealskinz's own Aquasealz membrane, a sealed three-layer waterproof insert from the maker: the 'sealed insert, maker's own' band. The reviewers disagree in use: The Great Outdoors found it let water in after about an hour of sustained moderate rain, while Steve Cleverdon's hands stayed dry after an hour in streams.
In short
Good for
- Autumn and spring hill walking, dog walking and wet, windy days when you want a light waterproof glove
- Cycling and scrambling on rough rock, where The Great Outdoors tester found the suede palm held up
- A spare waterproof glove at around 100 g a pair
Strengths
- Sealed Aquasealz waterproof membrane with a micro-fleece liner; Steve Cleverdon dipped his hands in streams for an hour and they stayed dry
- Very windproof: The Great Outdoors tester used it in biting easterly winds
- Light at about 100 g a pair (size M)
- Touchscreen-compatible index finger and thumb, a soft fleece nose wiper, a pull-on tab and a Velcro cuff strap
- Machine washable at 30 °C
Weaknesses
- Not fully waterproof in sustained rain: The Great Outdoors tester found water got in after about an hour of moderate rain or wet snow and had to wring the gloves out by the end of wet days
- Fits tight with limited stretch: both The Great Outdoors and several shop buyers advise going up a size
- Water can get in at the cuff: a Sealskinz.com buyer advises sealing the Velcro cuff over a jacket sleeve in heavy rain
- Sealskinz doesn't publish a weight: the 100 g figure comes from The Great Outdoors' quick specs
