Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 4/10How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 4: A bit below average.
The minimum trail weight is 2,154 g (tent, fly and poles), in the 2.0–2.69 kg band; packed with pegs and bags it is 2.37 kg.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 6/10How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 6: A bit better than average.
Fly 1,800 mm is the 1,500–1,999 band, band 3 (5 out of 10); the floor is 4,000 mm, so no point is taken off. The WildBounds spec table misprints the fly as 1,200 mm; its text and LFTO both give 1,800 mm.
Wind
Estimate: only 2 reviews about wind (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 6/10How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 6: A bit better than average.
Not enough evidence: only two reviews score wind. LFTO (3) found the steep end walls and top vent exposed and would not recommend it for breezy conditions; OUTDOOR magazine (3) called it not especially wind-stable, with its wind-tunnel test putting it flat at 80 to 90 km/h side-on. Wildland Trekking tested in 'some wind' without detail.
Space
From maker's figures 7/10Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 7: Better than most.
A 2.9 m² floor (215 x 135 cm) ÷ 2 people = 1.45 m² each, in the 1.35–1.59 band. Peak height is 105 cm.
Packed size
From maker's figures 4/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 4: A bit below average.
Packs to 50 cm long x 17.5 cm across: 3.1416 x 8.75 x 8.75 x 50 = 12,026 cm³, so 12.03 L, in the 10–14.9 L band.
What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score
Pitching*
Reviewers' average 8/10How quickly and easily one person can pitch it, including in wind and rain.
3 reviews on pitching, e.g. "The Ikos TR2 is quick and easy to pitch, thanks to that all-in-one hubbed pole system.".
Condensation*
Estimate: only 1 review about condensation (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10How dry it stays inside on still, damp nights; higher is drier.
1 review on condensation, e.g. "a large gap between the tent inner and the fly, which further helps to minimise condensation build-up".
Durability*
Reviewers' average 9/10How well the fabric, poles, zips and seams hold up over seasons of use.
3 reviews on durability, e.g. "Durable, robust materials and components throughout".
In short
Good for
- Two campers who want a roomy, tall freestanding tent and will not carry it far each day
- Warm, humid summer camps where the many vents keep it from feeling stuffy
- Short backpacking trips or car-supported camps with the tent split between two
Strengths
- Tension Ridge pole gives 105 cm peak height and near-vertical walls, so it is spacious for two
- Freestanding with two doors and two vestibules, so neither sleeper climbs over the other
- Many vent options: an oversized roof vent plus corner vents, and a mostly mesh inner
- Fly can be pitched first, alone, or as a shelter on two hiking poles
- Fly 1,800 mm and floor 4,000 mm, with tough 68D polyester fabric and quality zips and pegs
- Wildland Trekking saw no wear after a month camping on rocky ground
Weaknesses
- Heavy for backpacking: 2.15 kg minimum trail weight and 2.37 kg packed
- Packs to 12 L (50 x 17.5 cm), large for a two-person tent
- Top vent sits under the fly and can let wind-driven rain drip onto the inner (LFTO)
- Steep end walls are buffeted in wind and only four guy lines are supplied (two very short)
- Wildland Trekking found water seeping through the floor after heavy rain on soggy ground with no footprint
