Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight for its size

From maker's figures 8/10

How much it adds to your pack for the amount it holds. 8: Clearly better than most.

Sea to Summit's UK page gives 212 g (1.3 L, pot with lid and handle); its US page gives 208 g, so we use the heavier figure. 212 g for 1.3 L = 163 g per litre, in the 150-219 g/L band. Two testers weighed 228 g with handle and lid, which would be 175 g per litre, the same band.

Cooking and ease of use

From reviews 8/10

How evenly it heats, whether food sticks or burns, cleaning, and the handles, lid, pouring and steadiness on a small stove. 8: Clearly better than most.

Three hands-on sources agree: heats evenly and boils fast (4 min 10 s for two cups in one test, against 5 min 51 s for an MSR Trail Lite), non-stick coating that cleans easily, useful strainer lid. Complaints are the heavy handle that tips the empty pot and a lid clip that only holds on level ground. A fourth video (Ultralight Gear) is from a retailer's own channel, so it doesn't count.

In short

Good for

  • One person cooking real meals, or two people boiling water
  • Simmering and frying with a ceramic non-stick surface, where titanium pots catch
  • Carrying a small stove, canister and lighter inside (the handle reverses to lock the lid shut)

Strengths

  • 212 g for 1.3 L, light for an aluminium pot with a lid, strainer and non-stick coating
  • Aluminium spreads heat more evenly than titanium, so it suits cooking
  • Click-Safe handle can be reversed to lock the lid shut when packed
  • Strainer lid, lid clip (LidKeep) and volume marks inside
  • Sea to Summit says the ceramic coating is PTFE-free and the pot non-PFAS

Weaknesses

  • About twice the weight of a 750 ml titanium pot
  • The heavy handle tips the empty pot, and its lock works the opposite way to most pots
  • Full to the brim at 1.3 L: a tester says about 1 L is the practical amount to boil
  • Not for induction hobs, and not dishwasher safe (Sea to Summit says the anodising is damaged)
