Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Waterproof build
From maker's figures 6/10How well its build keeps water out, from the published seams, closure and submersion claim. 6: A bit better than average.
Double-stitched, tape-sealed seams and a hypalon roll-top, with a waterproof, air-permeable base. Sea to Summit says it is for internal use and not for water sports, so there is no submersion claim: the 3 band.
Weight for its size
From maker's figures 7/10How much it adds to your pack for the space it protects. 7: Better than most.
110 g for 20 L is 5.5 g/L, in the 4.0–5.9 g/L band (Sea to Summit's figure; Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 103 g, 5.2 g/L, the same band).
In short
Good for
- Squashing a down jacket, quilt or sleeping bag small inside a rucksack while keeping it dry
- Light packs where space is tight: 110 g for 20 L
- Internal use only, not for strapping outside or for water sports
Strengths
- Four compression straps squeeze soft kit down evenly
- Waterproof, air-permeable base lets air out without a purge valve
- 30D Ultra-Sil Cordura body keeps it to 110 g for 20 L (5.5 g/L)
- Double-stitched, tape-sealed seams
- Field Repair Buckle you can replace yourself
- Sizes from 3 to 20 L
Weaknesses
- Heavier than a plain Ultra-Sil dry bag (58 g at 20 L): about 52 g more for the compression
- Thin 30D fabric: Sea to Summit says it is not for paddle sports or for carrying outside the pack on a bike
- Not submersible
- No hands-on reviews of the current bag at 20 L were found, so durability and ease scores are missing
- Shops name the base fabric differently (Sea to Summit says Evac fabric, one UK shop says eVent), so older reviews may not match
