Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 2/10How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 2: A weak point.
Salewa's minimum weight is 2.9 kg (3.25 kg maximum), in the 2.7 kg+ band.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 8/10How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.
Salewa's specification gives a 3,000 mm fly and a 5,000 mm floor. Its description text says the fly is 5,000 mm, so its own page disagrees with itself; we band the lower 3,000 mm, which is in the 3,000 mm+ band, and the floor is over 2,000 mm, so no point comes off. The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.
Wind
Estimate from maker's specs: maker's season rating (fewer than 3 reviews about wind) 5/10How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
No published review says how it copes with wind, so this is an estimate from the maker's season rating.
Space
From maker's figures 6/10Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 6: A bit better than average.
Salewa's own figures disagree: its specification says the inner tent area is 3 m² (1.5 m² each, band 1.35-1.59), but its floor plan prints the inner as 210 cm long and 120 cm wide, which is 2.52 m², or 1.26 m² each, in the 1.15-1.34 band. As with the fly's water column, we band the lower figure, 2.52 m². Alpinetrek lists the same 120 x 210 cm, and another UK shop's copy of Salewa's data gives 2.52 m² too.
Packed size
From maker's figures 3/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
Salewa gives 40 x 20 cm, which we draw as a roll 40 cm long and 20 cm across: 3.1416 x 10 x 10 x 40 = 12,566 cm³, so 12.57 L, in the 10-14.9 L band.
In short
Good for
- Two people who want a proven freestanding three-season dome for trekking and hill camps and can share 2.9 kg
- Buyers who want two doors and two porches (the vestibule extends, Salewa)
Strengths
- Freestanding dome with two entrances and two vestibules (Salewa)
- Fly 3,000 mm and floor 5,000 mm HH
- Aluminium 7001 T6 poles
- Reflective guylines, rain guidance at the entrance and a vestibule that can be extended
Weaknesses
- 2.9 kg minimum, about 1.45 kg each when shared, is heavy for a hill tent
- Packs to 40 x 20 cm, about 12.6 L
- Inner 120 x 210 cm on Salewa's floor plan, about 1.26 m² each (its text says 3 m²)
- No independent review of the current model found, so wind, pitching and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores
- Salewa's own page gives the fly as both 3,000 and 5,000 mm
- Only one UK shop selling it when we looked (Alpinetrek)
