Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 7/10

How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 7: Better than most.

Robens' minimum weight is 1.3 kg, in the 1.0–1.49 kg band. Its packed weight is 1.8 kg (Robens and Alpinetrek), which would be the 1.5–1.99 kg band, so what you carry is nearer 1.8 kg.

Rain protection

From maker's figures 8/10

How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.

Flysheet 4,000 mm is in the 3,000 mm+ band, and the 6,000 mm floor is over 2,000 mm so no point comes off. The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.

Wind

Estimate from maker's specs: maker's season rating (fewer than 3 reviews about wind) 5/10

How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

No published review says how it copes with wind, so this is an estimate from the maker's season rating.

Space

From maker's figures 6/10

Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 6: A bit better than average.

Robens' plan shows an inner 220 cm long and 65 cm wide at the head end, tapering to 50 cm at the foot. Average width 57.5 cm: 220 x 57.5 = 12,650 cm², or 1.27 m², in the 1.15–1.34 m² band.

Packed size

From maker's figures 8/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 8: Clearly better than most.

Robens gives 46 x 12 cm (a stuff-sack cylinder): 3.1416 x 6 x 6 x 46 = 5,202 cm³, so 5.2 L, in the 4–6.9 L band. Alpinetrek lists 38 x 15 cm, which works out at 6.7 L, the same band.

In short

Good for

  • Wet UK trips and cycle touring, where a 4,000 mm flysheet and 6,000 mm floor help
  • Camps with a fire nearby: Robens says the polyester flysheet is flame-retardant, so a stray spark will not burn through it

Strengths

  • Very waterproof for the money: 4,000 mm flysheet and 6,000 mm floor
  • Side door with a mesh panel, and a porch on the same side for kit
  • Colour-coded alloy poles and pole sleeves closed at one end for easier pitching; it can be pitched without the inner
  • Packs to 46 x 12 cm (about 5.2 L)

Weaknesses

  • Heavier in real use than the headline figure: 1.3 kg minimum, but 1.8 kg packed
  • Narrow inner: 65 cm wide at the head and 50 cm at the foot, so it is snug for a wide mat
  • Low at the foot end: Robens' plan shows a 95 cm high head and a 60 cm high foot
  • Not freestanding: needs pegs and guylines
  • No independent reviews found, so wind, pitching and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores
