Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Warmth
From maker's figures 10/10How cold a night you can sleep comfortably through. 10: The best you can buy for this.
Robens quotes a comfort temperature of -8 °C and a limit of -15 °C, tested to EN 13537 (the older name of the ISO 23537 test). That is in the -5 °C or colder band. Robens now lists the bag as the Couloir LW -15°C with the same figures; its own page states the EN 13537 test.
Room inside
Estimate from maker's specs: bag shape (fewer than 3 reviews about room) 3/10How much room to move, bend your knees and sleep on your side. Roomier is comfier. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
No review we found says how roomy it is, so this is an estimate from the bag shape.
Weight
From maker's figures 5/10How much it adds to your pack. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
1,190 g for the Regular (Robens, Alpinetrek and Live for the Outdoors agree) sits in the 1,000-1,299 g band. Live for the Outdoors weighed its sample at 1,250 g, still the same band.
Packed size
From maker's figures 4/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 4: A bit below average.
Robens gives no litres, only 30 x 21 cm. Cylinder: 3.1416 x 10.5 x 10.5 x 30 = about 10.4 L, in the 9-12.9 L band. Live for the Outdoors measured its sample at about 40 x 21 cm (roughly 13.9 L, which would be a 1); we band the maker's figure but note the gap.
In short
Good for
- UK winter camping and Scottish hills, with a winter-grade mat (R 4.5 or more)
- Solo tent users who want to sit up and keep their hands free: the centre zip is the main reason to buy it
Strengths
- -8 °C comfort and -15 °C limit at 1,190 g
- Centre zip with a deep double baffle and padded neck baffle
- Soft Toray nylon shell
- RDS-certified duck down, 95/5 down to feather
Weaknesses
- Mid-grade 700 fill down, so heavier and bulkier than 800 fill bags of similar warmth; about 10 L packed by Robens's figures, and a reviewer measured it nearer 14 L
- The latest bag has no hydrophobic down treatment (the older version did), so condensation matters more
- Snug cut from the waist down, no wide or women's version, and the metal zip can touch your chin when cold
- Too warm above about 3 °C, and the centre zip cannot be opened out like a quilt
- Damp performance, comfort and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores: not enough independent evidence on the current bag
