In short
Good for
- Winter mountaineering and hikes on rugged terrain in sleet, snow and driving rain
- Pulling on over layers and crampon-ready boots with full-length two-way side zips
- Heavy users who want reinforced hems, crampon patches and brace attachment points
Strengths
- 20,000 mm hydrostatic head and 20,000 g/m2/24h breathability (Rab)
- 40D 3-layer Pertex Shield at 148 gsm, which Rab says stands up to rough rock and climbing gear
- Full-length two-way side zips with internal storm guards
- Reinforced hems and crampon patches, snap hem adjustment and knee articulation
- Hook-and-loop waist adjustment, brace attachment points and a YKK AquaGuard fly zip
Weaknesses
- 538 g in size M, against 348.5 g for Rab's Firewall Mountain pants
- Rab pitches these at winter mountaineering and rugged terrain; its lighter Firewall pants are for mountain hikes
- Tricot-lined waistband with fly zip and brace points, where Rab's lighter Firewall pants have a simple elasticated waist
