Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Brightness
From maker's figures 6/10How much light it gives at full power, for finding your way in the dark. 6: A bit better than average.
Petzl states 450 lumens to ANSI/PLATO FL1 with the three AAA batteries it comes with: the 300–499 band. With the CORE battery (sold separately) it reaches 625 lumens.
Runtime
From maker's figures 9/10How long one charge or set of batteries lasts at a level you can walk and cook by. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.
Petzl's FL1 table gives the 100-lumen standard mode 10 hours on AAA (plus 20 hours of reserve light), in the 10 h+ band; the battery type isn't stated beyond alkaline, lithium or Ni-MH. On the CORE battery it is 7 hours (the 4 band).
Weight
From maker's figures 6/10How much it adds to your pack and your head. 6: A bit better than average.
Petzl lists 98 g, which Ultralight Outdoor Gear gives as with batteries: the 90–109 g band. Australian Hiker's page prints 88 g in its text but 98 g in its spec box.
In short
Good for
- Camp use, three-season hill walking and short night walks on a lamp that runs on AAA
- Hikers who may add the CORE rechargeable battery later (625 lumens) without buying a new lamp
- Trips where you may be days from a charger: AAA batteries are easy to carry
Strengths
- 450 lumens (FL1) at 98 g with a 100 m reach
- Three AAA batteries included; the 100-lumen standard mode runs 10 hours, the lowest mode 100 hours
- Mixed flood and spot beam, single large button (easy with medium gloves, CleverHiker), lock mode and battery indicator
- Red light and strobe; phosphorescent reflector to find it in the dark
- Hybrid design: takes the CORE battery (USB-C, sold separately), which lifts output to 625 lumens
- 5-year Petzl warranty on the lamp
Weaknesses
- IPX4 only: splash-proof, not for heavy rain or immersion
- 98 g is heavier than most lamps of this brightness (CleverHiker)
- Throw is short for 450 lumens, and there is no switch between spot and flood (CleverHiker)
