In short
Good for
- Hillwalking, scrambling and winter mountaineering in a heavy-duty shell
- Anyone who wears a climbing helmet: the hood is built to fit over one
- Walkers who want a GORE-TEX shell made without intentionally added PFAS
Strengths
- 3-layer 75D GORE-TEX ePE Performance fabric with a recycled polyester face
- Helmet-compatible two-way hood with a laminated visor and reinforced brim
- Watertight two-way pit zips (35 cm each, Live For The Outdoors)
- Two Napoleon chest pockets with watertight zips, two welted front pockets and an inside pocket
- Fabric, membrane and DWR finish made without intentionally added PFAS
- Weather protection and durability both score 8 from independent tests
Weaknesses
- 510 g (Patagonia's figure) is heavy for a shell
- Hood is oversized and hard to cinch evenly without a helmet (The Great Outdoors, BetterTrail)
- PFAS-free DWR needs washing and re-proofing more often than older finishes (UKC, Live For The Outdoors)
- Generous, boxy cut: UKC suggests sizing down
- Patagonia doesn't say how the seams are finished, so rain protection is an estimate, not a reviewed score
