Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 4/10

How much the empty rucksack adds to what you carry, as sold. 4: A bit below average.

Osprey lists 2,092 g for the S/M (65 L), in the 2,000 to 2,699 g band. The L/XL (68 L) is listed at 2,180 g.

Comfort with a full load

From reviews 9/10

How well it carries a full camping load over a long day: hip belt, shoulder straps, back and how the weight sits. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

Four reviewers carried camping loads. CleverHiker used about 13.6 kg and scored comfort 4.6 of 5. BetterTrail took about 16 kg on a weekend trip and said it felt lighter than its most minimal packs (its own comfort rating is 4.5 of 5, which we count as 4 because a half rounds down). Switchback Travel used about 11 to 18 kg on several overnights and about 23 kg on a climbing trip (shoulders a little sore, load transfer still good). Wild (Australia) used it on multi-day walks with a tent and gave no load: wide, supportive hip belt and no pressure points. Caveats: CleverHiker calls the suspension stiff and says the rigid structure keeps the load farther from the body, and Switchback says the hip belt takes getting used to. Osprey rates the pack for 14 to 18 kg. Not counted: Section Hiker (no load given).

Durability

From reviews 7/10

How well the fabric, zips, buckles and frame hold up over seasons of use. 7: Better than most.

Three reports of real use, all short-term. Switchback Travel used it on several overnight trips and a climbing trip and saw no signs of excessive wear on the 210D body and 500D base, with no concerns about setting it down on rough granite or squeezing through branches. Wild used it for several days on rough, overgrown tracks and found no wear or damage. Live for the Outdoors tested the women's Aura AG 65, which Osprey sells as this pack's women's version: after rough ground on several trips it shows some wear and tear, though it hasn't affected how it works yet (counted as 3). CleverHiker and BetterTrail judge the materials but report no wear, and Section Hiker does not describe any, so none of the three is counted.

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Fit*

Reviewers' average 9/10

How well the back length and straps adjust to fit you.

5 reviews on fit, e.g. "Fit adjustment is unusually deep. The torso can be changed while the pack is being worn".

Access*

Reviewers' average 9/10

How easily you get at kit without unpacking.

5 reviews on access, e.g. "Side access also reduces the need to unpack the top of a fully loaded 65-liter bag.".

Pockets*

Reviewers' average 9/10

How useful the pockets are on the move.

6 reviews on pockets, e.g. "the vertical opening and pull loop make both narrow bottles and one-liter Nalgenes easy to access without removing the pack".

In short

Good for

  • Multi-day trips with a load of 14 to 18 kg, the range Osprey rates it for
  • Warm or humid weather: the suspended mesh back panel holds the pack away from your back for airflow
  • Walkers who want lots of pockets and easy access: four ways into the main bag and big zipped hip belt pockets

Strengths

  • Mesh back panel, hip belt and shoulder straps stretch over a 4 mm perimeter frame, which leaves an air gap against your back
  • CleverHiker, BetterTrail and Switchback Travel found it very comfortable with loads of about 11 to 18 kg
  • Torso length, harness and hip belt all adjust, and the two sizes cover torso lengths from 43 to 58.5 cm
  • Four ways into the main bag: the top, a curved zip down each side and a bottom sleeping bag hatch
  • Big zipped hip belt pockets (a large phone fits), two zipped lid pockets, two zipped front pockets and tall side bottle pockets that CleverHiker could reach without taking the pack off
  • Rain cover included, plus removable sleeping pad straps, ice axe loops and a trekking pole holder on the shoulder strap
  • 30-year guarantee from Osprey

Weaknesses

  • Heavy: 2,092 g for the S/M and 2,180 g for the L/XL
  • Rated for only 14 to 18 kg, down from about 23 kg on the previous model (Switchback Travel); CleverHiker and BetterTrail both name the Osprey Aether 65 as the better pack for heavier loads
  • The stiff suspension and hip belt take getting used to: CleverHiker found the rigid structure keeps the load farther from the body and can feel cumbersome, and Switchback Travel says the hip belt takes getting used to
  • Section Hiker could not take an upright bottle out of a side pocket while wearing the pack, and found it odd that the two side zips do not join into one opening
  • Lots of zips, buckles and pockets add weight and can feel over-complicated (BetterTrail, CleverHiker)
