Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Waterproof build
From maker's figures 8/10How well its build keeps water out, from the published seams, closure and submersion claim. 8: Clearly better than most.
Ortlieb says it permanently welds all seams, and the bag has a roll-top closure with a stiffener bar. It is rated IP64 (dust-tight and splash-proof from all directions), with no submersion claim: the 4 band (welded seams and a roll-top).
Weight for its size
From maker's figures 1/10How much it adds to your pack for the space it protects. 1: A real weak point.
370 g for 22 L is 16.8 g/L, over 12.0 g/L: the 1 band (Ortlieb UK's spec table for the 22 L size; SJS Cycles gives the same 370 g).
In short
Good for
- Rough use: boats, haul sacs, luggage racks and kit that gets dragged
- A tough liner for a sleeping bag or clothes in a rucksack when weight doesn't matter
- Sizes from 13 L to 109 L, with side handles from 59 L up
- Not for river crossings or anything that may go under water
Strengths
- Welded seams and a roll-top closure with a stiffener bar
- PVC-coated polyester that Ortlieb calls one of its strongest heavy-duty fabrics, with a tough base
- D-rings for securing the bag in a boat or on a roof rack; also used as a haul sack
- 5-year warranty, and Ortlieb can reweld holes
- Made in Germany
Weaknesses
- 370 g for 22 L is 16.8 g/L, so it scores low for weight for its size: 266 g more than the Dry-Bag Light 22 L
- IP64 means splash proof, not submersible
- Ortlieb says the roll-top must be rolled 3 to 4 times and secured downward to reach IP64
- Ortlieb says it is not suitable for storing food or drinking water, and shouldn't be stored rolled up
- No independent tests found, so durability and ease are estimates, not reviewed scores
