Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Warmth

From maker's figures 3/10

How well it stops the cold ground chilling you. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

Nemo's R-value of 2.4 is marked 'ASTM F3340-18' in the R-value graphic on its product page, in the R 2 to 2.9 band: spring to early autumn nights. Section Hiker and Live for the Outdoors both call it a warm-season pad, not for cold shoulder-season nights.

Thickness

From maker's figures 7/10

How deep it is. Deeper is comfier, above all for side sleepers. 7: Better than most.

7.6 cm thick.

Quietness

From reviews 9/10

How little it crinkles or squeaks when you turn over. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

Reviewers call the Tensor Elite quiet, with no crinkle; one says it is silent.

Weight

From maker's figures 10/10

How much it adds to your pack. 10: The best you can buy for this.

Nemo's minimum weight for the regular mummy is 240 g (mat alone), under the 400 g line. With stuff sack, pump sack and strap Nemo gives 330 g; Live for the Outdoors weighed 248 g bare and 326 g with everything. Ultralight Outdoor Gear still lists an older 268 g.

Packed size

From maker's figures 10/10

How much room it takes in or on your rucksack. 10: The best you can buy for this.

Nemo gives 14 cm long and 8 cm across, about 0.7 L, well under the 1.5 L line (Live for the Outdoors measured 15 x 9 cm, about 1 L).

In short

Good for

  • Summer and early-autumn wild camps where nights stay above about 0 to 4 °C with a suitable bag
  • Weight-focused walkers who pitch in a tent on a groundsheet and want the lightest full-length air mat
  • Side sleepers who want a stable, quiet mat that packs to about 0.7 L

Strengths

  • 240 g for the regular mummy, one of the lightest full-length air mats made
  • Packs to about 14 x 8 cm, smaller than a 2-litre bottle
  • Baffles spread weight and stay quiet: reviewers report no crinkle noise
  • Vortex pump sack, flat valve with fine pressure release, repair patches and strap come in the box
  • Lifetime warranty to the original owner from authorised dealers

Weaknesses

  • R 2.4 is for warm nights only; add a foam mat below it for cold ones
  • The 10D shell is thin: Section Hiker and Field Mag call it fragile, so keep it off bare ground and check the tent floor for grit
  • Slippery top: a sleeping bag can slide on it (CleverHiker, Field Mag)
  • Tapered mummy shape, 51 cm at the shoulders, feels narrow to some reviewers
  • No multi-year durability reports yet: the mat is new for 2025
