Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Warmth

From maker's figures 5/10

How cold a night you can sleep comfortably through. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Nemo gives an ISO comfort figure of 5 °C (limit 0 °C) for the Regular, which sits in the 0.1 to 5 °C band. The maker's figure, not re-tested. Nemo's model name lists the limit first, then the comfort rating.

Room inside

Estimate: only 1 review about room inside (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 6/10

How much room to move, bend your knees and sleep on your side. Roomier is comfier. 6: A bit better than average.

The one review found calls the Soul a classic mummy that is neither generous nor tight. Too little evidence to say more.

Weight

From maker's figures 7/10

How much it adds to your pack. 7: Better than most.

Nemo's minimum weight of 875 g (without sacks; 950 g packed with them) sits in the 700-999 g band.

Packed size

From maker's figures 6/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 6: A bit better than average.

Nemo states a compressed volume of 6.4 L, in the 6-8.9 L band. The 26.5 x 18 cm sack works out close to that: 3.1416 x 9 x 9 x 26.5 = 6,743 cm3, about 6.7 L.

In short

Good for

  • Mild spring and early autumn camps where nights stay above about 0 °C
  • Backpackers who want a synthetic bag under 1 kg that is small enough for a pack
  • Campers who often wake to a damp tent wall and want a waterproof panel over the footbox and hood

Strengths

  • Light and small for a synthetic bag: 875 g and 6.4 L for the Regular
  • Recycled Zerofiber 800 synthetic fill, so a damp night is less of a worry than with ordinary down
  • Waterproof reinforced hood and footbox to keep tent condensation out of the fill
  • Internal draft collar (Headwall) and a chest vent (Thermo Gill) with a zippered footbox opening for airflow; Adventure Alan calls the collar very effective at stopping draughts
  • Comes in Short, Regular and Long, and there is a warmer version of the same shape

Weaknesses

  • Only a mild-weather bag: comfort 5 °C and limit 0 °C, so it is not a UK winter bag and cold sleepers will want a warmer one for frosty nights
  • Short zip: Adventure Alan found the half-length zip harder to climb in and out of, and it cannot open fully for maximum airflow
  • Synthetic fill is bulkier than down at the same warmth, and Adventure Alan notes it packs bigger than down
  • Only one independent hands-on review found, from the first weeks of use, so damp performance, comfort and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores
  • The Regular fits up to 183 cm: taller sleepers need the Long (950 g, 6.6 L)
