Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Warmth

From maker's figures 5/10

How cold a night you can sleep comfortably through. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

ISO comfort 4 °C (limit -2 °C) sits in the 0.1 to 5 °C band. A three-season bag for spring to early autumn; the -1 °C in the name is the rounded limit rating. The maker's figure, not re-tested.

Room inside

Estimate: only 1 review about room inside (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How much room to move, bend your knees and sleep on your side. Roomier is comfier. 8: Clearly better than most.

OutdoorGearLab calls the Riff notably roomy and one of the best for side sleepers, with extra girth below the waist. Only two independent sources were found.

Weight

From maker's figures 8/10

How much it adds to your pack. 8: Clearly better than most.

845 g (the maker's minimum weight, Regular) sits in the 700-999 g band. The UK shop lists 857 g and The Big Outside's reviewer weighed 879 g on his scale; both are in the same band.

Packed size

From maker's figures 8/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 8: Clearly better than most.

Maker states a 4 L compressed volume, so we use that (4-5.9 L band). Its own 26 x 19 cm packed size works out larger: 3.1416 x 9.5 x 9.5 x 26 = about 7.4 L, which would be the 6-8.9 L band. The Big Outside notes it is not among the most compact down bags at this rating.

In short

Good for

  • Side sleepers and restless sleepers on spring-to-early-autumn UK camps, with nights above about 4 °C
  • Campers who want a roomy bag without much weight: 845 g in Regular

Strengths

  • Roomy spoon shape with extra space at the elbows and knees, at 845 g
  • Chest vents with interior and exterior zips let you shed heat without a cold draught, and the large collar folds in or out
  • Hydrophobic 800 fill down, with a reinforced waterproof hood and footbox against tent condensation
  • Recycled shell and lining; Nemo takes the bag back for recycling at the end of its life

Weaknesses

  • ISO comfort is only 4 °C, so cold sleepers need a warmer bag or layers for UK spring and autumn nights near freezing
  • The roomy cut leaves more air to warm up, and The Big Outside says it is not among the most compact down bags at this rating
  • The maker's packed volume (4 L) does not match its own packed size (26 x 19 cm, about 7.4 L), so check it fits your rucksack
  • Short on independent evidence: we found only one test of the current version, so damp performance, comfort and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores
