Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight for its size
From maker's figures 7/10How much it adds to your pack for the water it holds. 7: Better than most.
Nalgene lists 177 g (177.25 g) for 1 L, and OutdoorGearLab weighed the same bottle at 177 g: 177 g per litre, in the 100–179 g/L band. We count the bottle as 1 L, as Nalgene sells it and prints it on the side (1000 ml); counted at its US nominal volume of 0.95 L it would be 187 g per litre, which is band 3.
Packed size (empty)
From maker's figures 4/10How much room it takes up when it is empty, for the water it holds. 4: A bit below average.
A rigid bottle does not shrink. Nalgene gives 21 cm tall and 89 mm across: 3.1416 x 4.45 x 4.45 x 21 = 1,306 cm³, so 1.31 L empty for 1 L held. That is just inside the 1.3–1.79 band. The height is not agreed: Ultralight Outdoor Gear also says 21 cm and Alpinetrek 22 cm, but OutdoorGearLab measured 20.1 cm (probably without the cap), which would give 1.25 L and band 3. We use Nalgene's 21 cm, which two UK shops match or exceed, so this band sits close to the line.
In short
Good for
- Backpacking and wild camps where you want one tough bottle that also works as a hot-water bottle in your sleeping bag
- Filling from taps, streams and filter bags, and mixing drink powders
- Hikers who do not mind a rigid bottle that takes the same room full or empty
Strengths
- Wide 63 mm mouth: easy to fill, clean and add ice or drink powder, with mL marks on the side
- Survived drops onto rocky trails with scuffs only (CleverHiker, OutdoorGearLab), handles boiling water (Steve Cleverdon) and passed OutdoorGearLab's leak test 100%
- Stays shut in a pack: a simple screw lid, attached by a loop
- Lifetime guarantee from Nalgene (Steve Cleverdon and UK shop listings)
Weaknesses
- No insulation: in OutdoorGearLab's test the water passed 40 °C after 6 hours in the sun
- Wide mouth splashes when you drink on the move (all three reviewers); a splash guard or narrow-spout lid fixes it
- The lid's loop strap is the weak point and has sharp edges: OutdoorGearLab advises not to carry the bottle by it
- Does not fit most car cup holders (OutdoorGearLab, CleverHiker)
- Rigid: takes 1.31 L of pack room even when empty
