Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight for its size
From maker's figures 9/10How much it adds to your pack for the water it holds. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.
Nalgene lists 135 g (134.75 g) and Outdoor Clothing and Camping Burford (both UK shops) say the same, so we use 135 g. Ultralight Outdoor Gear alone lists 152 g, with a body 92 mm wide against Nalgene's 89 mm, which looks like a different bottle's figures. Nalgene sells it by its US nominal size, which converts to 1.42 L (the printed scale stops at 1,400 ml), though UK shops call it 1.5 L: 135 g over 1.42 L is 95 g per litre, under 100 g/L, band 5. This one sits close to the line: on ULOG's 152 g it would be 107 g per litre and band 4.
Packed size (empty)
From maker's figures 5/10How much room it takes up when it is empty, for the water it holds. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
A rigid bottle does not shrink. Nalgene gives 28.5 cm tall and 89 mm across: 3.1416 x 4.45 x 4.45 x 28.5 = 1,773 cm³, so 1.77 L empty for 1.42 L held = 1.25, in the 0.7–1.29 band (1.18 if counted as the 1.5 L UK shops list, the same band).
In short
Good for
- Solo or two-person trips where one big bottle saves carrying two
- Dry camps and long carries between water sources
- Hot-water-bottle use in a sleeping bag on cold nights
Strengths
- 135 g for 1.42 L, about 95 g per litre: lighter per litre than the 1 L Ultralite (106 g/L)
- Same 89 mm body width as the standard 1 L wide mouth Nalgene; Nalgene says it fits pack side pockets that take that bottle (via a UK shop listing)
- Wide 63 mm mouth with an attached loop-top cap
- Lifetime guarantee from Nalgene (UK shop listings)
Weaknesses
- No independent review of this size found
- One UK shop lists the weight as 152 g; Nalgene and two UK shops say 135 g
- Rigid and 28.5 cm tall: takes 1.77 L of pack room even when empty
- Wide mouth splashes when you drink on the move
