Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight for its size
From maker's figures 7/10How much it adds to your pack for the water it holds. 7: Better than most.
Nalgene lists 177 g (177.25 g) for 1 L: 177 g per litre, in the 100–179 g/L band. Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 170 g, the same band. Nalgene's narrow mouth page gives exactly the same weight and height as its wide mouth page, so the narrow bottle's own figures may not have been measured separately.
Packed size (empty)
From maker's figures 4/10How much room it takes up when it is empty, for the water it holds. 4: A bit below average.
A rigid bottle does not shrink. Nalgene gives 21 cm tall and 89 mm across (the same as its wide mouth page): 3.1416 x 4.45 x 4.45 x 21 = 1,306 cm³, so 1.31 L empty for 1 L held, in the 1.3–1.79 band. Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 23.5 cm tall (1.46 L), the same band, so the score does not depend on which height is right.
In short
Good for
- Drinking on the move or at a desk without splashing, and for children
- A second bottle for daily use alongside a wide mouth one
- Not the best pick for filling from streams or filter bags
Strengths
- Narrow neck: easy to drink from and much less likely to spill (Hunting Waterfalls)
- 177 g for 1 L, light for a rigid bottle
- Same Tritan Renew material and loop-top lid as the wide mouth bottle, with mL marks on the side
- Lifetime guarantee from Nalgene (UK shop listings)
Weaknesses
- Harder to fill from a stream: a reviewer found it only one-third full after a quick dunk
- Hard to clean (some brushes will not fit) and standard ice cubes do not fit
- A reviewer spilled half of a boiling-water pour trying to fill it as a hot-water bottle
- No independent test of its durability or ease found
- Rigid: takes about 1.3 L of pack room even when empty
