Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 3/10How much it adds to your pack. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
605 g packaged (MSR's Tech Specs; 597 g minimum weight), in the 450-649 g band. Singletracks lists 612 g; Ultralight Outdoor Gear's listing says the set weighs 566 g.
Fuel use
From maker's figures 7/10How much fuel it burns to boil a litre in calm air: less fuel to carry. 7: Better than most.
MSR says 18 litres per 227 g canister, which is 12.6 g per litre, in the 11-13.9 g band.
Boil speed (calm air)
From maker's figures 6/10How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in calm air. 6: A bit better than average.
MSR says 4.5 minutes for 1 litre with IsoPro fuel (270 s), in the 270-329 s band and right on its lower line. We found no precise independent 1 litre timing to set against it; GearJunkie's 4 min 40 s is for the full 1.8 litre pot.
In short
Good for
- Pairs who want one pot for two freeze-dried meals or a meal and a brew
- Exposed pitches, ridges and coastal camps where wind beats an open stove
- Wild campers who also want a stable remote-canister stove with simmer control
Strengths
- Enclosed radiant burner with a regulator: all three reviewers rate its wind performance top marks
- 1.8 litre pot sized for two, with a 0.85 litre bowl, strainer and drinking lid
- Remote canister and three fold-out legs make a wide, stable base (Treeline Review)
- 18 litres per 227 g canister, about 12.6 g per litre
- Takes MSR's WindBurner skillet, coffee press and other pots
Weaknesses
- 605 g packaged, in the 450-649 g band: heavy for one person
- No built-in igniter: carry a lighter or fire steel
- Bulky at 12.5 x 12.5 x 20.5 cm, and it only nests with a 227 g canister (Singletracks)
- GearJunkie: the insulating cosy can pop the lid off when pouring; Treeline Review dislikes the fabric handle
- MSR says to keep the canister above freezing for full output, so we do not mark it winter-ready
