Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight for its size

From maker's figures 8/10

How much it adds to your pack for the amount it holds. 8: Clearly better than most.

MSR's description says 68 g and its specs table gives 0.07 kg and 0.45 L. We band the heavier 70 g: 70 g for 0.45 L = 156 g per litre, in the 150-219 g/L band (150 g per litre is the edge, so it sits 6 inside it); 68 g would be 151 g per litre, the same band. Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 70 g.

Cooking and ease of use

Estimate from maker's specs: what it is made of 3/10

How evenly it heats, whether food sticks or burns, cleaning, and the handles, lid, pouring and steadiness on a small stove. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

In short

Good for

  • A light cup for tea and coffee that also boils water on a small stove
  • A small stove nests inside the cup, and the cup fits inside a Titan Kettle 900 mL (MSR)
  • Measuring water for dried meals with the marks inside the cup

Strengths

  • 70 g for 450 ml, 156 g per litre
  • Titanium, so there is no coating to wear off
  • Silicone-coated folding handles that are comfortable to hold and fold flat to pack (MSR)
  • Removable silicone lip saver protects your mouth from hot titanium (MSR)
  • Interior volume marks for measuring liquids (MSR)

Weaknesses

  • The silicone lip saver must come off before the cup goes on a stove (MSR)
  • Titanium has hot spots, so it suits boiling water better than cooking eggs or other sensitive food (MSR)
  • No independent hands-on test of the 2024 version found
