Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 8/10

How much it adds to your pack. 8: Clearly better than most.

278 g is MSR's published weight for the complete kit (stove, 0.75 L pot, bowl, lid, pot lifter, stuff sack), in the 250-349 g band. MSR also lists 0.26 kg packaged (same band) and 0.24 kg minimum, which would sit in the under-250 g band; we band the complete 278 g kit. Backpacking Light and Bikepacking.com both quote 278 g.

Fuel use

From maker's figures 6/10

How much fuel it burns to boil a litre in calm air: less fuel to carry. 6: A bit better than average.

MSR says 16 litres per 227 g canister (MSR IsoPro), which is 14.2 g per litre, in the 14-19.9 g band.

Boil speed (calm air)

From maker's figures 8/10

How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in calm air. 8: Clearly better than most.

MSR says 3.5 minutes (210 s) for 1 litre with IsoPro, in the 210-269 s band. The 0.75 L pot is marked to 500 ml; Inga's Adventures timed 2 min 40 s for 500 ml in calm air.

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Wind performance*

Reviewers' average 6/10

How well it keeps boiling in a breeze.

6 reviews on wind performance, e.g. "its burner head design offers reasonable wind resistance for short boils. In strong wind, however, performance suffers noticeably.".

Simmer control*

Reviewers' average 8/10

How low the flame turns down without going out, for real cooking.

7 reviews on simmer control, e.g. "The PocketRocket flame was easy to adjust and both the pot and pan resulted in acceptable eggs.".

In short

Good for

  • Solo walkers and bikepackers who want a light, cheap one-pot kit for boiling water and simple meals
  • Three-season wild camps in sheltered pitches, with a windbreak when it blows
  • Anyone who wants a compact kit that nests a small canister, stove and pot in one stuff sack

Strengths

  • 278 g for the whole kit, in the 250-349 g weight band
  • Stove, 0.75 L pot, lid, bowl, pot lifter and a small canister all nest in one stuff sack (12.7 x 10.2 x 10.2 cm)
  • Boils 1 litre in 3.5 minutes by MSR's figure (210 s)
  • Insulated pot grip, strainer lid and measuring bowl make it a cook-and-eat kit for one
  • Inga's Adventures found the aluminium pot cooked eggs evenly and the flame easy to adjust

Weaknesses

  • Open flame with no windshield: the only kit wind test took 69% longer in a strong wind, and reviewers of the stove call it susceptible to wind
  • 16 litres per 227 g canister (14.2 g per litre) is hungrier on fuel than the integrated systems
  • No igniter, so carry a lighter
  • The pot is marked to 500 ml, so it suits one person; the bowl melts if you leave it on the pot when you light the stove
  • No pressure regulator: power drops as the canister empties or gets cold, so not for winter
