Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight for its size

From maker's figures 9/10

How much it adds to your pack for the amount it holds. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

MSR's US and EU pages (it has no separate UK page) both give 147 g and a 1 L size. 147 g for 1 L = 147 g per litre, under 150 g/L, so a 5, but only just. Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 128 g; Outdoor Life measured about 145 g and UKHillwalking weighed 145 g.

Cooking and ease of use

From reviews 8/10

How evenly it heats, whether food sticks or burns, cleaning, and the handles, lid, pouring and steadiness on a small stove. 8: Clearly better than most.

Three hands-on sources like it. UKHillwalking (4; Toby Archer, whose site says it receives free products for review) found it pours well with no drips, the wide mouth washes easily and the lid stays on when pouring; he missed a way to keep the lid on in the pack. Backpacker (4; Gear of the Week) says the precise spout eliminated dribbles over a five-day trip and a wide base boils faster than a standard pot. Outdoor Life (4; its best overall camping kettle) found the fastest boil of the kettles tested, a smooth pour, a secure handle and a lid that stays put, but the clear lid fogs up and hides the boil.

In short

Good for

  • Solo walkers and pairs who mostly pour boiling water for tea, coffee, drip coffee and dehydrated meals
  • Drip-coffee fans who want a spout that pours a steady stream
  • Packing a PocketRocket 2 stove with its case, or a PocketRocket Deluxe, plus tea or coffee inside (MSR)

Strengths

  • 147 g for 1 L, 147 g per litre
  • Precise, drip-free spout and a lid that stays on while pouring (UKHillwalking; Outdoor Life)
  • Fastest boil among the kettles Outdoor Life tested
  • Folding handle stays upright, away from the hot pot
  • Wide opening makes it easy to clean and fill (MSR; UKHillwalking)

Weaknesses

  • Plastic parts: MSR advises against using its aluminium cookware over an open fire because they could melt, and Outdoor Life notes the same
  • The plastic coating on the handle wore through within months (UKHillwalking)
  • The lid falls off when packed unless you hold it with a band or bag (UKHillwalking)
  • The clear lid fogs up so you can't see the boil (Outdoor Life)
  • Safe fill is about 740 ml of the 1 L (Outdoor Life), enough for one meal and a brew but tight for two
