Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight for its size

From maker's figures 2/10

How much it adds to your pack for the amount it holds. 2: A weak point.

MSR's description gives 365 g for the 775 ml size and its specs table gives 0.37 kg. We band the heavier 370 g: 370 g for 0.775 L = 477 g per litre, in the 450 g/L+ band; 365 g gives 471 g per litre, the same band. Ultralight Outdoor Gear also lists 365 g. MSR sells the pot in four sizes (475 ml, 775 ml, 1.1 L, 1.6 L). The 775 ml is the size most UK shops list; the 1.1 L and 1.6 L are the 2 band (400 and 344 g per litre).

Cooking and ease of use

From reviews 8/10

How evenly it heats, whether food sticks or burns, cleaning, and the handles, lid, pouring and steadiness on a small stove. 8: Clearly better than most.

Three hands-on sources like it, none gives it a top mark. Treeline Review (4; field-tested, June 2026) names it its best stainless steel pot, recommends the 775 ml for most solo users and likes the rounded corners that push heat up the sides and the fact it can go in a fire; it dislikes the weight and the lack of insulation (its comparison table lists the 1.1 L, its write-up names the 775 ml). Countryfile's Leonie Helm (4; 4.5 out of 5 overall, ten years of use; she doesn't say which size) finds it heats evenly and holds heat well for simmering, but says food sticks unless you use oil and it is slower than titanium. Black Owl Outdoors (4; a 3-year field review of the 775 ml size from 2016, titled 'Seagull Stowaway'; the pot shown has the same locking handle and lid and the same size as MSR's current page, which has listed the same 365 g weight since at least 2019) likes the locking lid that doesn't rattle, the long cool handle and the wide shallow shape that heats quickly, but misses a pouring spout and measuring marks. The pot is one design in four sizes, so a review of any size speaks for how it cooks.

In short

Good for

  • Solo walkers, and one-pot meals for two, who want a pot that survives years of knocks
  • Cooking on a wood fire or coals, where titanium and coated aluminium pots can warp or scratch
  • Carrying food, or a small stove and gas canister, inside with the handle locking the lid shut (MSR; Treeline Review)

Strengths

  • Stainless steel with no coating or plastic parts, so nothing to wear off, melt or snap (Countryfile)
  • Hinged handle flips over the lid and locks it, so the pot doubles as a food container (MSR)
  • The long handle stays cool at the tip (Black Owl Outdoors)
  • Sold in four sizes, so you can match the pot to the group

Weaknesses

  • Heavy for its size at 477 g per litre, the lowest band: the 775 ml pot weighs 370 g, against 126 g for MSR's titanium 900 ml kettle
  • No pouring spout and no measuring marks (Black Owl Outdoors)
  • Food sticks without oil and it heats slower than titanium (Countryfile)
  • Not insulated (Treeline Review)
