Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

Estimate from maker's specs: the maker's weight 5/10

How much they add to your pack. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Estimate from maker's specs

Rain protection

From maker's figures 7/10

How well the fabric and seams keep out heavy, long rain, when new. 7: Better than most.

A named GORE-TEX ePE membrane with no mm figure on Mountain Equipment's current page, so the GORE-TEX rule gives 7 (an estimate: a 9 or 10 needs reviews). Seams are taped throughout (Mountain Equipment's page as archived on 17 Oct 2025; the current page no longer lists it). That archive copy is the same trousers (75D GORE-TEX ePE, 360 g, £200) from when Mountain Equipment still called them the Makalu; Tiso's page says the Makalu pants became the Saltoro. The new Makalu is a different 70D, 420 g, £250 model. We ignore the 28,000 mm printed on the archived page and by the shops.

In short

Good for

  • Mountaineering, mountain walking and trekking, Mountain Equipment's own list
  • Walkers who want 3-layer GORE-TEX at 360 g
  • Wearing over boots with 3/4-length two-way side zips and an adjustable hem

Strengths

  • 3-layer GORE-TEX 75D fabric (Mountain Equipment)
  • 360 g (Mountain Equipment)
  • 3/4-length 2-way YKK side zips for venting and pulling on over boots
  • Articulated knees, gusseted crotch, elasticated waist with drawcord and adjustable hem
  • Short, regular and long leg lengths in S to XXL

Weaknesses

  • Elasticated drawcord waist only, where the Makalu has an integrated belt and brace attachment points
  • Needs a cool iron or low tumble dry to reactivate the DWR
