Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Warmth
Estimate from maker's specs: mitt (fingers share warmth) 8/10How warm they keep your hands at camp and on the move. 8: Clearly better than most.
Estimate from maker's specs
Weight
From maker's figures 5/10How much they add to your pack. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
170 g for the pair, Mountain Equipment's figure on its product page (size not stated): the 110-179 g band. Ultralight Outdoor Gear's page lists pairs at 139 g (S), 143 g (M), 153 g (L) and 162 g (XL), also in that band.
Waterproofing
From maker's figures 4/10How well they keep your hands dry and the wind out, from how they are made. 4: A bit below average.
Mountain Equipment's own DRILITE insert, described as 'waterproof and breathable'. The page never says the insert is sealed, and DRILITE is Mountain Equipment's own fabric range, not a named membrane brand. The method's 4 band needs a sealed insert, so a mitt with its own membrane and no statement that the insert is sealed is the 2 band, the same call as the Mountain Equipment Mountain Glove, the Extremities X-Dry gloves and the OEX Summit. It would be the 4 band if Mountain Equipment said the insert is sealed.
In short
Good for
- Cold, wet winter hill walking and trekking
- Pole and ice axe use: Suregrip palm
- A spare warm, waterproof pair kept in the pack for the worst of the weather
Strengths
- DRILITE waterproof, breathable insert with POLARLOFT insulation and a microfleece lining
- 170 g for the pair
- 160D nylon Oxford outer and a Suregrip palm
- Single-handed drawcord closure
- Sizes XS to XXL; Mountain Equipment guarantees its gear against defects in components, materials and workmanship for the reasonable life of the product
Weaknesses
- Insert not described as sealed, so waterproofing scores 4
- No touchscreen fingertips (a mitt)
- The POLARLOFT amount isn't stated, so warmth can't be compared on numbers
- New code for autumn 2026 with no independent review of this version yet, so warmth, dexterity and durability scores are blank
