Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Warmth
From reviews 9/10How warm it keeps you standing still at camp. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.
Three reviewers rate it warm for cold days: Switchback Travel found it most comfortable well below freezing and warm in a T-shirt at about -7 °C in light activity (5); Backpacking UK wears it from about 0 °C down and finds it too hot walking at 5 °C (4); MarksGoneWalking, who bought it himself, calls it instant warmth on cold, windy Snowdonia ridges (4). Average 4.3 out of 5, so 9 out of 10. Mountain Equipment itself describes it as ideal for freezing conditions. The reviews date from 2019 to 2022 and cover the same spec as today's jacket (700 fill power duck down, 296 g in size L, DRILITE Loft 40D, 740 g): Mountain Equipment's own 2021 and 2022 pages (Internet Archive) list the same figures as its page now.
Weight
From maker's figures 3/10How much it adds to your pack. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
Mountain Equipment lists 740 g, in the 600-799 g band. Switchback weighed a medium at about 710 g and Backpacking UK weighed a small at 704 g, the same band.
In short
Good for
- Freezing, mostly dry conditions, which Mountain Equipment describes it as made for
- Low-output wear at a cold camp or while belaying
- Spare layer over a fleece on winter hill days when weight matters less than warmth and toughness
Strengths
- Rated 4 for warmth by three reviewers, with 296 g (size L) of 700 fill power duck down
- Tough 40D windproof, water-resistant shell
- Zip-off insulated hood with wired peak, 2-way front zip, security pocket and stuff sack
- RDS-certified down with DOWN CODEX traceability
- Often reduced in UK shops
Weaknesses
- Heavy at 740 g, in the 600-799 g band
- Bulky: no packed size published, and Switchback measured about 18 x 25 cm packed
- Down is not hydrophobic and loses loft when wet (Switchback)
- Too warm for walking at about 5 °C and above (Backpacking UK)
- The reviews found date from 2019 to 2022; Mountain Equipment's page now lists new colours with the same spec as its 2021 page
- Durability is an estimate, not a reviewed score: only two reviewers comment
