Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Warmth
Estimate: only 2 independent reviews about warmth (fewer than the 3 we need) 6/10How warm it keeps you standing still at camp. 6: A bit better than average.
Two hands-on write-ups of this jacket, both calling it mid-range. Live for the Outdoors (3) wore it for four days at 4-5 C with a sea wind and found a decent, reliable warmth boost, but not a super-toasty jacket. Better Trail (3) found it ample for evening lows in the high 40s F and, near freezing, warm over a base layer and midweight fleece, and rates warmth 3.5 out of 5. Both put it at a cool spring or autumn evening level. Average 3 out of 5, so 6 out of 10, below what our fill-weight estimate gave.
Weight
From maker's figures 8/10How much it adds to your pack. 8: Clearly better than most.
Mountain Equipment lists 390 g, in the 350-449 g band. No size is given, so this may not be the men's M weight. The earlier version was listed at 440 g, the same band, so the score doesn't depend on which weight is right.
In short
Good for
- Cool spring and autumn evenings at camp, and as a midlayer under a shell in colder weather
- 3-season backpacking where you want a down jacket made from recycled materials
- Belays and cold stops: it clips to a harness through the pocket loops
Strengths
- 390 g listed, with 155 g (size L) of 700 fill power down
- Insulated helmet-compatible hood, two-way front zip with an insulated baffle and 4 pockets
- Packs into its own hand pocket with karabiner loops
Weaknesses
- Warmth rests on only 2 independent reviews (3 needed), and damp performance and durability aren't scored
- No packed size published
- The outer has a DWR finish only, with no waterproof membrane, and wet down loses loft
- 700 fill power is a lower grade than the 800 fill in lighter down jackets such as the Mountain Equipment Xenith
- Live for the Outdoors weighed a men's small at 411 g, above the 390 g listed with no size
