Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight for its size

From maker's figures 3/10

How much it adds to your pack for the water it holds. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

Montbell lists 237 g for 0.5 L (product 1134167): 474 g per litre, in the 300–499 g/L band, close to the line. Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 238 g (476 g per litre, same band).

Packed size (empty)

From maker's figures 3/10

How much room it takes up when it is empty, for the water it holds. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

A rigid bottle does not shrink, so we draw it as a cylinder from its height and width. Montbell gives 22.5 cm tall and 6.8 cm across: 3.1416 x 3.4 x 3.4 x 22.5 = 817 cm³, so 0.82 L empty for 0.5 L held (1.63 per litre), in the 1.3–1.79 band.

In short

Good for

  • Mountain days and winter walks where a hot drink must stay hot until the afternoon
  • A light insulated bottle that can be opened with gloves on
  • Anyone who wants the outer cap as a cup

Strengths

  • 237 g for 0.5 L: 474 g per litre
  • Montbell gives 95 °C down to 78 °C after 6 hours at 20 °C room temperature
  • Insulated inner cap with a hexagonal grip, made to open with gloves on (Montbell)
  • Outer cap doubles as a cup; the flip-top Active lid and a cup set are sold separately
  • BPA free; stainless steel inner wall (SUS316)

Weaknesses

  • 237 g for 0.5 L: 474 g per litre, over twice the weight per litre of a plastic bottle
  • 0.82 L of pack room for 0.5 L of drink
  • Montbell gives temperatures at 6 hours, not hours-hot, so hold time is not shown as a figure
  • Bottle body and inner cap are not dishwasher-safe (Montbell)
  • Montbell's own shop ships from Japan or Switzerland; Ultralight Outdoor Gear is the only UK shop found
  • No independent test of this version found, so ease of use and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores
