Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Warmth
Estimate from maker's specs: fleece or softshell glove 3/10How warm they keep your hands at camp and on the move. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
Estimate from maker's specs
Weight
From maker's figures 8/10How much they add to your pack. 8: Clearly better than most.
80 g for the pair, Montane's figure (size not stated; Montane's US page agrees; Tiso repeats 80 g): the 60-109 g band.
Waterproofing
From maker's figures 4/10How well they keep your hands dry and the wind out, from how they are made. 4: A bit below average.
Montane calls it windproof and builds it from WINDSTOPPER Products by GORE-TEX LABS, but neither its description nor its materials table names a water-repellent finish (the table says 'non-fluorocarbon membrane'), and it makes no waterproof claim. The method's 3 needs a windproof shell with a water-repellent finish, so we score the band below. Protection level is shown as wind and water resistant because The Great Outdoors' tester saw the women's glove bead water and cope with showers, not because Montane says so. Shops' older 'Gore-Tex Infinium' copy is theirs, not Montane's current wording.
In short
Good for
- Cold, windy hill days in autumn and spring where you want a close-fitting, windproof glove you can keep on
- Walking with poles: goat-leather palm and fingers
- Using a phone or GPS with the gloves on
- Fast-and-light days in exposed mountain terrain, which Montane names
Strengths
- WINDSTOPPER shell blocks the wind, with a micro-grid fleece backer, at 80 g for the pair
- Goat-leather palm and fingers for durability and grip
- Pre-curved fingers and thumb, low-profile cuff and a thumb nose wipe
- Touchscreen-compatible fingertips
- Montane's lifetime guarantee against faults in workmanship and materials
Weaknesses
- Windproof only on Montane's page: no water-repellent or waterproof claim, so it isn't for steady rain
- Only one independent review of this build found (the women's glove), so our warmth, dexterity and durability scores are blank
