Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Warmth
Estimate from maker's specs: fill type and jacket weight (no fill figures published) 5/10How warm it keeps you standing still at camp. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
Estimate from maker's specs
Weight
From maker's figures 6/10How much it adds to your pack. 6: A bit better than average.
Montane lists 450 g, in the 450-599 g band and on its lower edge. No size is given, so this may not be the men's M weight. Trekitt also gives approx. 450 g (no size), but Ultralight Outdoor Gear weighs a Medium at 364 g, which would be the 350-449 g band, band 4 (7 out of 10). We band Montane's own figure.
In short
Good for
- High-effort cold days of climbing and mountaineering, worn as a midlayer under a shell
Strengths
- PrimaLoft Gold Active Vent insulation, which Montane says is breathable and manages moisture
- OCTA fleece lining that Montane describes as quick drying, breathable and light
- Reach+ construction for arm lift, plus stretch cuffs with thumb loops
- Two pack and harness compatible YKK chest pockets and a low profile hood
Weaknesses
- Insulation is mapped to the front, shoulders and top of the arms only
- The nylon outer has a water repellent finish rather than waterproofing
- Montane describes it as a midlayer for stop-start activities
