Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Warmth

Estimate from maker's specs: mitt (fingers share warmth) 8/10

How warm they keep your hands at camp and on the move. 8: Clearly better than most.

Estimate from maker's specs

Weight

From maker's figures 8/10

How much they add to your pack. 8: Clearly better than most.

65 g for the pair, Montane's own figure for the mitts (its page says they 'weigh just 65g'; Sportsshoes repeats it, and the Respond gloves carry the same figure): the 60-109 g band, just inside it.

Waterproofing

From maker's figures 4/10

How well they keep your hands dry and the wind out, from how they are made. 4: A bit below average.

Pertex Quantum outer with a PFC-free water-repellent finish (DWR): a water-repellent finish only. Montane's own page makes no windproof or waterproof claim. Montane's separate Respond Dry Line mitts add a waterproof insert and weigh 85 g: not this product.

In short

Good for

  • Instant warmth over a thinner glove on cold, windy tops: Montane describes them as warmth over more dextrous gloves, or as a single layer
  • A light spare pair at 65 g, with a stuff sack included
  • Quick tasks with a liner glove underneath

Strengths

  • PrimaLoft Gold 60 g/m² insulation at 65 g for the pair
  • Pertex Quantum outer with PFC-free water-repellent finish
  • Pre-curved digits and elasticated wrist to keep the cold out
  • Faux-leather panels with touchscreen compatibility
  • Montane's lifetime guarantee against faults in workmanship and materials

Weaknesses

  • A water-repellent finish only: not a waterproof mitt
  • Palm panels are faux leather rather than real leather
  • A reviewer wears them over thin liners and takes them on and off for quick tasks like taking bearings
