Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 6/10

How much it adds to your pack. 6: A bit better than average.

Montane lists 395 g without naming the size, in the 370-469 g band. Sportsshoes prints the same 395 g; Backcountry Pilgrim quotes about 394 g.

Rain protection

Estimate from maker's specs: hydrostatic head figure 8/10

How well the fabric and seams keep out heavy, long rain, when new. 8: Clearly better than most.

Estimate from maker's specs

Warmth

Estimate from maker's specs: thin shell (adds almost no warmth) 1/10

How much warmth the jacket itself adds. Most shells add little: wear a warm layer under them. 1: A real weak point.

In short

Good for

  • Hillwalking and trekking in changing weather in a 3-layer shell with a two-way front zip
  • Cooler days, where having no pit zips matters less

Strengths

  • Montane's own figure: 20,000 mm hydrostatic head
  • 3-layer Petrichor fabric, which Montane says has no intentional PFAS
  • Two-way YKK Aquaguard front zip, covered pocket zips and a fully adjustable hood and hem
  • Laminated peak, hem and cuff tabs and offset seams to cut seams and weight

Weaknesses

  • Montane doesn't say the seams are fully taped, so rain protection is an estimate, not a reviewed score
  • Weather protection and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores: only one independent test of this jacket found
  • No pit zips (Montane's page and the one video review we found)
  • Montane's page gives two breathability figures (RET under 7 in the features, under 5 in the fabric text); the page shows the less favourable, under 7, as a fact (never scored)
