Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Warmth

Estimate from maker's specs: mitt (fingers share warmth) 8/10

How warm they keep your hands at camp and on the move. 8: Clearly better than most.

Estimate from maker's specs

Weight

From maker's figures 8/10

How much they add to your pack. 8: Clearly better than most.

80 g for the pair, Montane's figure (size not stated; its US page agrees, in ounces; no UK shop page we read gives a different weight): the 60-109 g band.

Waterproofing

From maker's figures 4/10

How well they keep your hands dry and the wind out, from how they are made. 4: A bit below average.

Pertex Quantum 20 denier nylon ripstop with a PFC/PFAS-free water-repellent finish, and Montane says the palm has waterproof fabric. There is no sealed insert or named membrane, so: a water-repellent finish only, the 2 band.

In short

Good for

  • Deep-winter days and emergency warmth: easy to pull on over liner or fleece gloves
  • Camp and rest stops in the cold, when you are not working with your fingers
  • Packing small: 80 g for the pair, with a stuff sack

Strengths

  • 80 g for the pair, filled on the back of the hand with 90/10 ExpeDRY goose down quoted at 800+ fill power
  • Synthetic insulation on the palm keeps its warmth when compressed
  • Waterproof fabric on the palm, a gauntlet cuff with adjustment and an elasticated wrist
  • Responsible Down Standard certified down
  • Montane's lifetime guarantee against faults in workmanship and materials

Weaknesses

  • Down on the back of the hand loses warmth when soaked; the shell is water repellent, not waterproof
  • A mitt, so little finger dexterity
  • Montane states the fill power two ways (800 and 800+) and gives no test method
  • No independent review of this version found, so our warmth, dexterity and durability scores are blank
