Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight for its size
From maker's figures 8/10How much it adds to your pack for the water it holds. 8: Clearly better than most.
Mazama lists 132 g for 1 L (1,000 mL filled to the wide mouth): 132 g per litre, in the 100–179 g/L band. Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 139 g and BIKEPACKING.com measured 132 g; both band 4. Counted at its 1.07 L narrow-mouth fill it would be 123 g per litre, still band 4.
Packed size (empty)
From maker's figures 4/10How much room it takes up when it is empty, for the water it holds. 4: A bit below average.
A rigid bottle does not shrink. Mazama gives 29.2 cm tall and 7.6 cm across (converted from its US sizes): 3.1416 x 3.81 x 3.81 x 29.2 = 1,332 cm³, so 1.33 L empty for 1 L held, in the 1.3–1.79 band. It sits right on the 1.3 line: counted at the 1.07 L narrow-mouth fill it would be 1.24 and band 3, so we use the 1 L wide-mouth figure, which scores lower. BIKEPACKING.com measured 29 cm tall.
In short
Good for
- Backpackers who want a reusable 1 L bottle that takes 28 mm filters such as the Sawyer Squeeze and Platypus QuickDraw
- Filling from streams and mixing drink powder through the wide second opening
- Easy cleaning on multi-day trips, where a narrow-neck bottle is hard to wash
Strengths
- 132 g for 1 L: 132 g per litre
- Two caps: the large one opens a wide mouth for filling, cleaning and ice, the small one takes 28 mm filters and sports caps
- Squeezable body helps when filtering straight through a screw-on filter
- Takes boiling water (Mazama), though Mazama advises against using it as a hot-water bottle because the caps can pop off under pressure
- Holds 1,070 mL when filled to the narrow mouth, 70 mL more than its 1 L mark
Weaknesses
- 68 g heavier than the Igneous NOBO (64 g) and 42 g heavier than the CNOC ThruBottle (90 g, BIKEPACKING.com)
- 29 cm tall and 7.6 cm across, so it does not fit standard bottle cages or all shoulder-strap pockets
- No tethered cap, so the cap can be lost (Lost Again with Jim)
- Printed volume marks wear off with use (Epic Hikers, BIKEPACKING.com)
- Drink-mix flavours can linger in the LDPE (Lost Again with Jim)
