Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Waterproof build
From maker's figures 10/10How well its build keeps water out, from the published seams, closure and submersion claim. 10: The best you can buy for this.
Matador says the FlatPak is fully welded with a roll-top closure and rated IPX7, and that it can handle full submersion for short periods when the roll-top is secured (WildBounds quotes 1 m for 30 minutes). Welded seams, a roll-top and a submersion claim: the 5 band.
Weight for its size
From maker's figures 3/10How much it adds to your pack for the space it protects. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
83 g for 8 L is 10.4 g/L, in the 8.5–11.9 g/L band (the weight on Matador's V2 8 L page, and on WildBounds' page). Matador's shop data for the same item lists 65 g (the first version's figure, which Matador's older listings also show); at 65 g it would be 8.1 g/L, band 3, so the lower-scoring figure on the page is banded.
What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score
Durability*
Estimate: only 2 reviews about durability (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 5/10How well the fabric and seams resist scuffs and holes.
2 reviews on durability, e.g. "Despite how thin it feels, durability has been solid in our testing.".
Reviewers disagree on this.
Ease of use*
Estimate: only 1 review about ease of use (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10How easily it closes, seals and packs.
1 review on ease of use, e.g. "It’s a straightforward system that works well once you get the hang of it.".
In short
Good for
- Keeping a camera, electronics, a down layer or a change of clothes dry on a trip where it may get wet
- A small dry bag that can go in or near water: IPX7, welded seams
- Packs flat when empty, so it adds almost no bulk
- Too small to line a rucksack: 8 L is the biggest size Matador makes
Strengths
- Welded seams, roll-top and an IPX7 rating (Matador says it handles full submersion for short periods)
- Packs flat when empty and stands up when loaded
- Clear TPU window shows what is inside; grab handle with carabiner loop and a D-ring
- 70D ripstop nylon, PFAS-free
Weaknesses
- 83 g for 8 L (10.4 g/L) is heavy for its size: the Alpkit Airlok is 2.3 g/L
- Pack Hacker warns the thin nylon could be punctured by sharp items
- Only 8 L: not big enough for a sleeping bag or a rucksack liner
- Older write-ups and some shops quote 65 g for the first version: check you're reading the V2
