Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 6/10How much it adds to your pack. 6: A bit better than average.
Lifeventure gives 680 g for the regular size, in the 600–899 g band. Live for the Outdoors weighed 681 g: 602 g for the bag, 56 g for the pole and 23 g for the stuff sack. Pegs are not included. Lifeventure also sells an XL (796 g), which is not listed separately.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 7/10How well the fabric keeps out heavy, long rain. 7: Better than most.
Lifeventure gives 11,000 mm hydrostatic head for its PU-coated 70D ripstop nylon, in the 10,000–14,999 mm band. It gives one figure for the whole bag, which counts for the floor too, so nothing is taken off. Its 15,000 g/m²/24 h breathability figure is for the top only and is not scored.
Packed size
From maker's figures 9/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.
Lifeventure gives 290 x 100 x 100 mm. Read as a stuff sack (length x diameter): 3.1416 x 5 x 5 x 29 = 2,278 cm³, about 2.3 L, under the 2.5 L line. Live for the Outdoors measured about 33 x 10 cm, about 2.6 L, which is the next band down. We band Lifeventure's figure.
In short
Good for
- Midge-prone summer nights: the zipped mesh screen keeps bugs off your face
- Wet weather, with a pole to hold the fabric off your face
Strengths
- Hooped design: one pole lifts the head end to about 45–50 cm, so the fabric stays off your face
- 11,000 mm hydrostatic head, taped seams and sturdy 70D ripstop nylon
- About 680 g and packs to about 2.3 L
- Zipped mesh screen, plus four pegging-out loops
Weaknesses
- Only one entry, at the head: no side zip, so getting in and out takes a crawl (a Lifeventure customer's review)
- Tight inside for wide shoulders (Cool of the Wild)
- Plastic pole is flimsy in wind and rattles (Cool of the Wild)
- Pegs and guy lines are not included (Cool of the Wild)
- 187 g heavier than the Outdoor Research Helium Bivy (Live for the Outdoors)
- Condensation, comfort and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores: fewer than 3 usable sources
