Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Protection
From maker's figures 8/10What it removes from water, and how well that is proved. 8: Clearly better than most.
0.2 µm hollow-fibre membrane. LifeStraw's page says it meets US EPA and NSF P231 drinking water standards for removing bacteria and parasites (99.999999% and 99.999%): a named standard for bacteria and protozoa, so 4. No virus claim.
Flow rate
Estimate from maker's specs: filter type (no flow rate published) 3/10How fast clean water comes through when it is new. Real flow drops as it clogs: see Ease of use. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

Weight
From maker's figures 8/10How much it adds to your pack. 8: Clearly better than most.
108 g for the bottle and filter. This is a shop-only figure: LifeStraw's 1 L page shows 102 g and 25.4 cm, which are the 650 ml bottle's figures, so we do not use them. 108 g comes from the Ultralight Outdoor Gear specification table, and OutdoorGearLab measured 108 g for the whole kit. UKH and Advnture give 110 g from an earlier LifeStraw blurb, in the same band. 90 to 149 g.
Ease of use
From reviews 8/10Filling, squeezing or pumping effort, how fast it clogs in peaty or silty water, and how easy it is to clean. 8: Clearly better than most.
OutdoorGearLab (9.0 out of 10, 4) found it easy; GearJunkie (4) and UKH's Dan Bailey (4) found it easy but needing effort; Advnture (5) found it very easy. Average 4.2 out of 5, so 8 out of 10. OutdoorGearLab's 10-point scores are halved and a half rounds down (9.0 becomes 4, 8.0 becomes 4, 7.0 becomes 3, 5.0 becomes 2), the same as on other Fellkit pages. UKH reviewed the squeeze bottle range without naming the size, and the filter and nozzle are the same in both sizes. UKH had free products, which it says.
